Created during a MAPP event in the Mission District, this public intervention responded to the humanitarian crisis at the United States-Mexico border in 2014.
Each chalk figure represented one of the more than 50,000 children detained at the border that year.
Over the course of an entire day, we drew hundreds of stick children across approximately four city blocks, transforming the streets into a temporary landscape of remembrance and visibility. The intervention quietly entered everyday life, inviting pedestrians to pause and reflect on the realities of migration, displacement, and detention.
Through repetition, collective action, and the use of public space, the project sought to create a moment of awareness and shared reflection within the heart of the community.
