San Francisco Symphony – Día de los Muertos Celebration
Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, California
2014
Created for the San Francisco Symphony's annual Día de los Muertos celebration, this interactive community altar honored the life and legacy of Maya Angelou, who passed away earlier that year. Inspired by her words and enduring influence, the installation invited visitors to contribute personal reflections using a typewriter and handwritten messages, transforming the altar through collective participation.
Developed through public workshops in San Francisco before its installation at Davies Symphony Hall, the project emphasized remembrance as a shared act. Thousands of visitors encountered the work as part of the Symphony's multidisciplinary celebration, in which visual art, music, and cultural traditions came together to honor memory, community, and the enduring impact of those who have passed.
